Published 1 year, 8 months ago in My life.I have to admit, I’m a tad anal. I have this thing that we are giving our trade away overseas, therefore, we are suiciding our jobs. Everyone else has the right to buy cheap and wisely if they like, but for me, I want to make a difference in my own mind. I buy australian made or prepared items where I can. Its amazing that the tin of peaches that I picked up today, trying to be a little bit thrifty with a woolies brand, came from sth africa….we are the land of fruit? whats happening to spc? cant buy a dried apricot from Aus, no indeedy, theyre turkish. Tuna…..I’ve caught huge tuna at Bermagui and seen the co ops with all the fish going in……try and buy Aussie tuna…..NOT And now, I’m trying to find peanuts in the shell…………have I been under a rock? Are they banned?? I’ve been looking for about 6 months, and they are all……….goneĀ I’m thinking if they are seasonal…..surely like little chipmunks someone would have stockpiled them?? Could someone enlighten me?? Meanwhile, i will sit back and sip my wonderful imported french brandy……..well, somethings you just have to cope with !!

Yeah, we are selling out our kids future for profit. Kind ‘o’ like raiding a futures fund just to set up a high speed internet network. Flaming Labour party, going to put the country in debt again!
Don’t get me wrong, I have a dislike for politicians of any party and I have a long memory.
Quite agree winnierose! What is happening now is even worse, Chinese companies are trying to buy up some of our iron ore and other metal deposits to mine them themselves. It has even been suggested they might try to buy out BHP Billiton! When I was at school in England in the late 50s I told a teacher I was going to Australia, he said, “Why, it will be overrun by the chinese in 30 years!” He meant militarily of course but they are now doing it by stealth and trade! And the worst thing is both sides of politics are encouraging it with the Free Trade Agreement!
I have a dear friend in WA who is/was an orchardist. He has been working his orchard all his adult life. Last year he ripped out most of his trees because he would make more money giving the fruit away. Fruit growers simply cannot compete with South America and South Africa. At fifty he now has to figure out how he can start again from scratch.
Another friend who has a cherry orchard in the South West is now doing full time fencing to support his family. I think there has been some very bad management going on in this country.
oh I agree Golden, I was trying to have a conversation with a friend about all of this, and she said to me totaly exasperated…”oh worry about that when it happens” meaning the constant loss of jobs that is actually happening. And I said, to her, that no doubt there were many like her that said that about water when it was first bought up that there may come a time when there will be a shortage.
