on our own doorstep.

red leadlight -kew cem.jpgangel-kew cem.jpgA while back, I was told about an amazing crypt, grave whatever you want to call it at the kew cemetary. It is the most awesome thing I think I’ve seen in a cemetary, and to think it’s here in kew and not from some fantastic place overseas. My photos of course dont do it justice. The story that I was told was so romantic. Legend has it that a rich girl was wooed into marriage by the gardener. They married on the 26th day of january, she fell pregnant and she died in child birth on the 26th day of january. Story goes, he wanted to show how much he loved her, and the locals had said that he married her for her money, so he spent every cent he had on building her the most fantastic resting place, with Red leadlight roof, and angels tending her needs, He placed seats around the outside so that he may sit day in and day out. Well the Historical society quickly quashed all romantic notion from my head. She had studied at melbourne uni and was a dr. (Cant remember if he was one too). She had 3 children, and died in childbirth with the 3rd. But- he did build this fantastic monument to her. They did marry on the 26th of jan, and she did die on the 26th of jan, but she was reburied on the 26th of jan after the monument was finished. surrounding this place is beautiful words, that he has had a stonemason etch into pavers. The rose of the leadlight shines down on the angels giving them almost a look like they are alive. It is the most fantastic place to see, and the only sad part about it, is that vandals have smashed off the gilded lily that she carried. Lets know if you get to visit !!

Sounds awesome! I love cemeteries, and this memorial thing sounds great. And the nearest station to the Kew cemetery is on the Belgrave line so hopefully sometime in the next uni holidays I’ll see it. :D

I always like going to see Dame Nellie Melba’s and her father’s (David Mitchell) grave at the Lilydale Lawn Cemetary. Her grave is about 150m from my Grandpa’s resting place.

I went on the National Trusts night tour of the Melbourne cemetry a couple of years ago, the usually run them a couple of times a year, it was interesting. The history and stories in cemetries can be awesome.

I think I like your romantic version better than the truth…still, it’s very romantic that the husband built the beautiful crypt for her.

I’m with you pinkcow, very romantic to think he loved her that much, that he fashioned it all in her memory. I can just see my hubby doing the same possibly thatching all of his fishing rods together to make an arbour over me, and then making wind chimes of his lures…………aahhh…..
