Where was I in the eighties??
Published 11 months, 3 weeks ago in My life.Song, she repeated. What is your favorite song from the eighties. I looked at her with that sort of cow in the headlights stare. Yeewwuuu !! Wasn’t that the era where kylie did locamotion ? milli vanilli ??
I am really stirring the memory bank for that era, I can remember a girlfriend lusting after George Michael ( that was wasteful) . What was I doing that I have such a sketchy memory of the 80’s ?? Possibly raising kids at that time may have stripped my ability to recall the music of the day.
I struggle because, we had such legends in the 70’s, skyhooks, sherbert, acdc, susi quatro…….oh they were the days. but the 80’s??
Well, I’ve finally come up with Cyndi Lauper and girls just want to have fun !
But maybe if you want to share your favorite, it may just jog my memory.

The Bangles - I love the song Eternal Flame
Oh yes. The 80’s…
Well there was a few dimensions to it all. The fluro, the big hair, the vivid make up, the rise of capitalism and ego power, (power suits), cocaine, etc. etc.
And of course, some great music, and some terrible music.
Locomotion must be in the worst top 5, surely. You pain me by the very mention of it!
What about a bit of The Police, Eurhythmics, (can’t spell it), Ghostbusters theme song, you like that huh?
Blondie, Midnight Oil, INXS, The Church… great stuff. Theres so much more good music that came out, but I just can’t think of it.
My fav movies from that era? Oh theres so many… 16 Candles, (what happenned to Matt Dillon, he was so hot back then!!) Pretty in Pink, Rock n Roll High School (For eva), The Goonies, The Neverending story, Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, Parenthood, … oh and theres much more I just know I’m forgetting the best of them.
Now talk to me about cartoons from the eighties… I was born in 81 so this is my childhood, okay?
Care Bears, He Man, She Ra, Scooby Doo (the original), Rainbow Brite, Inspector Gadget, Transformers, The Smurfs.
What a time!!
prince & madonna & hunters & collectors & TISM & Divinyls & Men at work & Talking heads & hoodoo guru & devo & blondie & debbie conway & the oils & madness & elvis costello & the cars & U2 & the police & dexy’s midnight runners & kate bush & sinead o’connor & peter gabriel & culture club & a flock of seaguls & til tuesday & my brain is getting tired now pity I havn’t got any BIG shoulder padded jackets left to rest my head on
I was a teenager in the 80s! Films: The Breakfast Club, St Elmo’s Fire, (Rob Lowe aaaah), Legend, The Blues Brothers, Raiders of the Lost Ark (that was a school excursion!, The Big Chill, Amadeus (another excursion!), This is Spinal Tap (HILARIOUS), Room with a View, CHildren of a Lesser God, Jean de Florette & Manon des Sources (more school excursions), Do the Right Thing and the worst was The Fabulous Baker Boys.
Bands: The Church, Hoodoo Gurus, The Cure, Hunters & Collectors, Painters & Dockers, Divinyls, U2, UB40, Sting, Billy Joel, The The, mmm we’re getting into the realm of don’t really want to remember now!
TV: He Man and She Ra (my 5 y.old just got a “Castle of Greyskull” last christmas so my memory is jogged because we “have the power”!), Moonlighting, definitely Scooby Doo, actually think we were still not allowed to watch much commercial TV! More MASH reruns & Hogan’s Heroes reruns.
Countdown! Off ot reminisce - now where did I put that stack of LPs and do we even own a turntable any more?!
Ah the 80s, cuttin’ laps of the main street with Bon Jovi and Van Halen blasting from the car sound system for which we’d forked out more than we’d paid for the clapped out old car. To think we thought those bands sounded so cool and we weren’t even taking mind altering substances. Let’s be frank, the eighties weren’t great…
We Build this City by Starship sums up the 80’s for me musically. A bit of rock with that special 80’s sound hehe. I didn’t get into music till 85′ and onwards. Like solomongrundy it was all Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Skid Row, Warrant etc. I missed the 80-85 music scene which I think I am glad I did. That was the part of the 80’s I didn’t like. Not just musically but with fashion as well.
ohhhhhh, I lurrvveed the bangles eternal flame, I think I could still harmonise with them. thanks skymija. Annie lennox, mmm, I’m starting to recall a few good memories. The never ending story, that was a nice movie, ah. blondie ( who is looking a tad aged now) Police were and are great, thanks titch. And viv, how could I have forgotten all those bands? some of them were good. culture club, conjured a memory. Gadfly, I love the blues brothers….was that 80″s..there you go, what a fantastic movie !!!! The cure was 80’s too??? I’ve just found out what they sing lately ( I Listen to vega, they play the cure alot) I suppose teenage mutant turtles, is one of those theme songs that stick with you. But, Jadmorffier, I dont think you missed much, cos I tend to agree with solomongrundy, the eighties wasn’t that great.
My sister loved Duran Duran. I know alot of there songs. My Brothers loved Adam Ant and Jone Jet but is that doing futher back then the 80’s
Well done folks!!
You’ve certainly jogged my memory…
Gadfly! some very good recollections you’ve come up with you eighties child you!
I admit having a thing for The Bangle eternal flame too.. it wasn’t hard!
The early Prince and Madonna were pretty cool, and I’ll even say Micheal Jackson before he went totally wacko. The Thriller album, come on.
Men at Work - yes that features strongly - there seemed to be a few songs which spoke of Oz culture (maybe it was triggered by MAD MAX), I’m also thinking of “The Great Southern land” sung by??
I liked Goanna (in terms of aussie names) and their song, “we’re living on solid rock, we’re sitting on sacred ground, we’re living on borrow time and the winds of change are coming down the line…”
Fantastic!
Though I agree not all of the eighties culture was so fantastic… I was born in 81, so probably young enough not to even know it all!
Not that I have much memory of the two and a half years I enjoyed in the eighties, but I do like the music very much these days. “I want the one I can’t have” and “I started something I couldn’t finish” by The Smiths are great. And “She’s In Parties” by Bauhaus.
Michael Jackson, thriller had 7 top 10 hits, 37 weeks at number1, like him or not the eighties were his best and showed what a talented guy he is.
Paul Kelly.
Hey the eighties was GREAT! So great in fact that the music and fashion of the eighties is now being revisited - vivavoce tis only a matter of time before the big shoulder pads make a comeback, as pretty much everything else has! Remember, the eighties is when we were introduced to Tom Cruise, and what about the original Brat Pack - remember 16 Candles, the Breakfast Club, St Elmo’s Fire, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off??? Makes me smile just to remember all those things. How can anyone say an entire decade was a waste? Never!
