Hi Winnierose - haven’t read a new earth yet. currently reading bits and pieces from 2007 Best Australian Essays and Best Australian Stories. Love Gillian Mears’ essay “Alive in Ant & Bee” so am going to seek out some of her books and see if I am similarly taken by them. Am about to read Vikram Seth’s “An Equal Music” because I loved “A Suitable Boy” so much and have Alexis Wright’s “Carpentaria” on the table waiting its turn. How is “A New Earth” going - and who are your favourite authors? Near the top of my list would have to be Shirley Hazzard - long wait between books but worth it!! Happy reading.
Gosh, I’m almost ashamed to admit I am reading such an old favorite as Ruth Rendell, Blood Lines, Long and Short Stories…..But they’re such clever little stories!
Hello Winnierose
What am I reading at the moment - “let me count (the ways/books)”. 2 cookbooks which dropped into the bottomless pit of my bookcases and have just resurfaced, A History of Benson (village in Oxfordshire from whence sprang my father’s family), The Joy of Words, Spiritual Intelligence (Tony Buzan, founder of Mensa),That’s the top of the pile beside my bed. I saw “A New Earth” in the bookshop today and that will be the next resident of my overstuffed bookcase. But you can’t have too many books, can you? There is a book for every mood and moment. I just wish there were an extra 4 - 5 hours in each day for reading.
God bless Mrs Bartholomew who shook me by the shoulders in grade three and said “It may kill both of us, but you WILL learn to read”. She should be the patron saint of reading teachers. Happy reading!
hhhmmmmmmmm Gadfly, I’m going to have to check out some of those books, I’ve not heard of any of them. A new earth is going well. I’ve learnt that I have chattering in my head consistently !!!! Well, I knew it was always happening, but its not until someone points out how incessant it is, that you realise .
Favorite author….ohh, that is a hard one I loved Bryce courtneys ” four fires!! but some of his other books left me disheartned. I loved Clan of the cave bear series, by M .aule. i love autobiographies and biographies.
I read jodie picoult. Dan Brown, john grisham, Dianne blacklock. Tim winton, Marion Keyes. oh, just give me another book, and that would be my favorite, this week !! Have been told the earth chronicles is a thought provoker.
I get most of my books from Op shops these days. Currently going through a Len Deighton phase and on my 11th book. Just about every one has been ‘hard to put down’.
Recent good reads I can recommend: The Wrong Boy by Willy Russell and a Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon. I was given the latter for Xmas and the author produces some of the most amazing backflips from tragedy to humour I have ever read.
My favourite authors include John Irving and Thomas Hardy. Having lived 16 years in Dorset it is easy to recognise many of the thinly disguised locations in Hardy’s ‘Wessex’.
An old classic: The Ginger Man by J.P. Donleavy.
What should be a classic: Catch 22 by Joseph Heller and The White Hotel by D.M.Thomas.
I’m here!! So many of my replies go missing though
I should post a poem sometime…
What is “A New Earth” about?
I don’t read many books (apart from stupid uni textbooks of course)… the last fiction book I read was Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk… very gruesome and definitely not for kiddies! But I couldn’t put it down.
I’m reading The woman in White by Wilkie Collins written in 1860, worth a read, look it up in the library
Hi winnierose, A new Earth Sounds inttuigingin, is it Ficyion or non fiction. I havent read much fiction at the moment. I am dipping into “Choosing Happiness” by Stephanie Dowrick, “Self Motivation” by Gael Lindenfield (Very different from what you might expect from the title) and a few books on sculpture and artists. Let us know how the book goes.
Hey Mischief, It is definately a non fiction book. Its all about Ego really !! I am also into Art books. I’m an illustrator and pastel artist myself. But love being inspired by other artists. One of my favorites would have to be Klimpt. But I also love Rosetti and all of the pre raphaelite painters, amongst many many others.
Love art books Mischief. I have lots of those, Klimpt is a favorite. A new earth is non fiction, its basically about ego………fascinating really. I suppose you could say a motivation type book.
